TURN ON YOUR INNER OPTIMIST!
Happiness is more than an emotion! It's also good medicine. The researches have proven that the happier you are, the more you will lower your risk of cancer, strengthen immune system, improve your lungs.
Tackle tension with two little words. Say: "thank you." This relaxes body and mind enough to increase feelings of optimism, lowering your risk of physical problems, even slashing your odds of ever having headaches or acne breakouts. It sends your levels of the stress hormone cortisol plunging for hours.
Take a few minutes each week to smile about the small stuff, like a sunny day. Once a week send one a wish of thanks by e-mail or phone.
Writing thank-you note is proven to lower your stress level, which lowers your risk of having a heart attack, researches say.

BLOOD PRESSURE BASICS
High blood pressure is called the silent killer because you can have it without knowing, and it can cause significant damage to your body.
It rarely has symptoms and the best way to determine if you do have it is to get your blood pressure tested.
How about learning a few more background basics?
*WHO
According to the American Heart Association you're at greater risk for hypertension if:
*You lead an inactive lifestyle.
*You don't have a healthy diet and eat too many salty foods.
*You are overweight.
*You drink too much or smoke.
*The condition exists in your family.
*You are African-American
WHAT
Everybody has blood pressure. It's how blood is pumped from your heart and through your arteries. It's measured using two numbers. The first one, systolic, is the pressure in your arteries when your heart pumps. The second, diastolic, indicates the pressure in your arteries when your heart is resting, between pumps.
WHY
If your blood pressure numbers are raised, it means blood is being pumped very hard through your arteries. Over time, this can damage your heart, brain and eyes, and lead to a stroke, aneurysm or heart attack.
HOW
To bring blood pressure into the healthy range:
*Limit your sodium and alcohol consumption.
*Focus your diet on fruits, veggies, whole grains, beans, fish and lean meats. Stay away from prepared foods, which have a lot of sodium. Alternatively, read labels to find brands with less salt.
*Manage your stress in whatever way works best for you-whether that's yoga, meditation, a long run or a quiet bath.
*Stay active at the gym, in the park or around your neighborhood.

EAT RED
A good way to prevent cardiovascular disease is to consume more red foods.
These foods are high in carotenoids, powerful antioxidants that also protect the eyes, internal organs, and skin. The red pigment found in pink grapefruit, red peppers, tomatoes, and watermelon, LYCOPENE is the most prevalent carotenoid in the circulatory system and has been found to reduce the risk of porstate and other cancers (says nutritionist M. Zimmerman) Another red carotenoid, astaxanthin, gives omega-3-rich salmon and trout their pink color, she adds.
Red berries and grapes are high in a number of anthocyanins, while apples, berries, and grapes are excellent sources of flavonols. Both these dietary flavonoids have been linked to healthy endothelial function, and they help inhibit platelet aggregation or clumping that leads to the formation of blood clots. These antioxidant compounds also fight a number of cancers and neurogenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Experimental research also suggests that resveratrol-found in grapes and wine-is potentially useful against heart disease and some cancers, helping to fight aging.

HEART. NUTRITION V. DRUGS.
While mainstream medicine offers numerous pharmaceuticals-especially statins-to people with high cholesterol and other symptoms of heart disease, simply eating fruits, omega-3 fats, nuts, vegetables, and whole grains and exercising regularly may be the most important steps in protecting the heart. In addition, some statins like simvastatin have been linked to a higher incidence of cancer.
A plant-based, whole foods diet, like that enjoyed in the Mediterranean region, may prevent cardiovascular disease as well as reduce its fatal complications. Brightly colored fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants and fiber, both protective against heart disease. Simply adding strawberries to a cholesterol-lowering diet- high in heart-healthy fiber, nuts, plant sterols, and soy-can lower LDL cholesterol and decrease oxidation of these lipids.

HEART OF HEALTH
Almost everything you do and feel can impact the vital muscle that is your heart.
Atherosclerosis, the process in which cholesterol builds up in the blood vessels, causes more than half the deaths in this country. The buildup of plaque in the vessel walls leads to further problems, including inflammation, oxidative damage, and eventually blockage if this process continues.
Females are less likely to survive heart attacks. One consideration may be that women tend to suffer attacks later in life, and older women may not be resilient enough to survive treatment.
